One mic I built from micparts.com which is suppose to replicate a U47, and a Warm Audio WA87.....now the Slate ML1. I set them up side by side and did a sound test. I ran them through a Focusrite Clarett 4Pre using the exact same settings. The Slate ML1 is not a power hog. The Warm Audio WA87 requires much more power to get the same output. That said, the WA87 has more character. It sounds like the ML1 going through the U47 setting with a preamp when it is naked. The mic parts.com was in the middle. I also have a Warm Audio mic preamp. It is the WA12, however it is a single channel preamp, so again, the difference in volume between the ML1 and the others was a factor. The ML1 is much more efficient. Bottom line.....I am happy I bought it. It appears to be made well. It is very neutral. Another tool in the sound arsenal, but a lot more experimenting to go. Why 4 stars for the Black Friday sale price......because of the iLok baggage.

The max spl for this mic is "about 120" their words and in all honesty I would be surprised if it even were that high. Id guess its closer to 110. So even though this mic sounds stunning on quiet vocalist and softer sections of songs it just wasn't going to work for what I needed. Quickly i want to mention that the mic modeling and digital rack options are incredible and sound freakishly incredible!!! The technology is 1000% there. I just need Slate to create a mic that has a max SPL of 150 to 165... for us very loud vocalists then ill be one of the first to get one!
