Dexibell

;) but there it is.

\nBut for the studio, I found I really needed at least 76 keys (as Id had with my previous Kurzweil before the S3) and, although the MIDI implementation and master control functionality are very well done and full-featured, its also clearly designed more as a performance board and so I found it a bit obtuse for integrating into the rest of my workflow.
\n
\nSo, I sold the S3 to a lucky buyer (who was supplementing his S9 for something more portable :) and went on a long vision quest to find The Perfect Studio Piano. Not that Id written Dexibell off, but I figured Id play the field once again and see what had changed. Well, here I am and I couldnt be happier! I really had missed the sound of the S3 and, as I dug further into the various capabilities out there and what all one could actually do with the T2L engine, its MIDI implementation, and the controller possibilities, I realised (somewhat belatedly) that I _could_ make it work with my studio process and it wouldnt even be so obtuse!
\n
\nThe sound: We are really blessed these days with the incredible variety of incredible quality digital pianos, software pianos, hybrid pianos, &c. In many ways, the Dexibell sound is _not_ as \"good\" as some \u2013 some of the sounds I dont even particularly like! But the thing about the T2L engine is that I _always_ hear the piano. Nord, of course, has really great pianos. Kurzweil has my favourite pianos in a synth package. Yamaha has long had stellar pianos. And so on. But _all_ the rest, to me, are \"piano sounds\". The Dexibell has the subtlest of nuances that are truly convincing to me of hearing a piano through the monitors. Obviously, this is highly subjective and Ive been really surprised by the wide variety of opinions on the topic (especially from myself! ;) but there it is.
\n
\nThe feel: I have to admit that my initial experience with the S7 was a little bit of a letdown. I had remembered my S3 so fondly that I had some very seriously high expectations for the S7. That said, I hadnt known at all what to expect when Id bought the S3 \u2013 that had been a recommended purchase from my most excellent Sweetwater rep \u2013 so I was blown away with the S3. But I have definitely warmed up to the S7 and love the enhanced graded-action TP-40 with ivory feel, the sense of really playing an _instrument_, and once again find myself getting lost in the playing, being surprised to find myself playing a digital and not acoustic piano.

I wanted something that would work both as a solid 88-key midi controller and also double as a piano to practice on in my small city apartment. The Dexibell is pretty versatile in that regard, allowing me to just sit down and jam without feeling frustrated at the keybed, but also working as a solid midi controller when I want to work in my DAW.
\n
\nFirst, the keybed. I am a classically trained pianist who grew up playing on an acoustic grand piano, so the action of the keybed is important. l have to say these keys are excellent, and one of the best Ive tried! The ivory feel, the key action, and the incredible piano sound engine make me almost forget sometimes that Im not playing on a grand piano (until I realize that everything on my studio desk is shaking). If you are wearing headphones it can be a truly immersive experience -- you can hear the hammer action when youre hitting keys or the string resonance when you lift your foot off the pedal. If youre on speakers though you might not be able to hear this as well, depending on how good your speakers are. Some reviews have mentioned that the keys are a bit noisy (its certainly louder than an acoustic piano, but not much louder than other digital pianos), but Ive never found this to be a problem once I started playing.
\n
\nSounds-wise, Id say that the pianos\/organs are the main attraction of this keyboard. Dont get me wrong, the other sounds are excellent to sketch and jam with and Ive done this on many occasions, but the keys instruments are definitely a level above the rest and the primary focus of the sounds on the Dexibell. For me this is fine, since I use this primarily as a piano for practice, and otherwise I connect it to my DAW so I have my VSTs to work with, but for those who may use this as their primary sound-producing instrument and are particular about your non-piano sounds, you may want to preview the sound library on the Dexibell site or on Youtube first to make sure its what you want.
\n
\nAlso, another thing to mention is the freaking amazing damper pedal that comes with it. If you want to play flutter pedal or half pedal, this thing can do it!
\n
\nFinally, the amount of connectivity this thing has is pretty great, and I can both route the output sound of this piano directly to my speakers and also hook it up via USB to my laptop, which makes it pretty convenient for switching back and forth between jamming on the piano and controlling my DAW. The bluetooth connectivity is nice if I just want to play backing tracks on Youtube from my phone\/ipad for practice, though I do wish I could also use the accompanying XMURE and Vivo editor apps over the bluetooth connection as well (yeah, Dexibells app connectivity is cable only, so you can only play sound over bluetooth...not my biggest gripe though since I dont use the apps much).

\n
\nOverall a great piano! Definitely recommend if you want that acoustic feel and sound, but still want to have the versatility to operate within a DAW.", "sir_rating": "5.0", "sir_name": "Christine", "sir_whereareyou": "", "sir_background": "classical pianist \/ music producer", "sir_keepanonymous": "0" }, { "id": 8072, "store_items_review_id": 291196, "media_type": "image", "thumbnail": "https:\/\/media.sweetwater.com\/api\/i\/w-160__wm-__q-60__hmac-58b19aa197829034a6b8eb2facc847f0a36b26ba\/URL_aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3dlYi11cGxvYWRzLTU1OTAyZmZjLzIwMjAxMTIwMTY0MzU3LXBocHF0ZWk4bC5qcGVn", "media_path": "https:\/\/media.sweetwater.com\/api\/i\/w-1080__wm-__q-60__hmac-a4e327e6b018faacc599c4ebe982f2a2055352a2\/URL_aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3dlYi11cGxvYWRzLTU1OTAyZmZjLzIwMjAxMTIwMTY0MzU3LXBocHF0ZWk4bC5qcGVn", "sir_title": "Watch out Red", "sir_comments": "After years of using a popular red stage keyboard, I moved and needed one of my own. The Vivo S7 Pro 88 does not disappoint in any way. Piano sounds are the best, controls are easy, and I can easily do what I used to do. I play mostly worship music, so I needed piano and soft warm pad underneath. You can easily couple the sounds they have on the vivo to get that effect and filter the frequency with wheel 2. Custom sounds work for a sound font file. Its a beautiful keyboard that feels and sounds like a grand. I play it with a fun organ module, synth, and midi just for fun sometimes. I also built a custom table stand for it to sit on. This is an excellent keyboard.", "sir_rating": "5.0", "sir_name": "Cody", "sir_whereareyou": "", "sir_background": "Worship Leader", "sir_keepanonymous": "0" } ]" :for-review="291196">
