YMMV。

LIKES

1. PORTABLE. Considering how capable this mixer is, it is very easy to set-up and move. Thanks largely to many powering options, especially the fact that it can be powered by AA batteries.

2. POWER OPTIONS. Mains, AA or via powerbank. Enough said.

3. 8-INPUTS. My first impression was I didnt need this much input as I am mainly a solo podcaster. But as I learned more about using separate sound sources in my livestreams (effects, additional mics, etc.) as well as my son joining me in the podcast, I now use 6 of the eight slots almost all the time.

4. SCENES. This is a timesaver. I hesitated on using this as I was discouraged by a post of an L-12 user in an FB group saying that it resets on its own. But after many sessions with the L-8 and switching between three shows, I can say this feature is very convenient.

5. BUILT-IN MIX MINUS. In all honesty, this was the deciding factor when I was choosing between the Zoom H6 and the L8. I knew that I was going to have guests via phone patch and I made the right decision. Granted there is a workaround to achieve mix-minus on the H6, having it readily available on the L8 makes setting up a lot easier.

DISLIKES (or things that I didnt know when I bought it)

1. NO DEDICATE PORT FOR POWER SUPPLY. I thought this had the same set-up as the Rodecaster Pro, but later learned that the port for the USB and power is one and the same. So I had to buy a set of rechargeable batteries and a charger at an added cost to make it work when using Apple devices.

2. NO MIX-MINUS ON THE USB LINE. If you are playing music on the laptop for instance, there is a slight delay on the signal and it will play on echo when the mixer sends the sound back to the computer, specially for livestreams.

3. CHANNEL 7 SLIDER DOES NOT AFFECT VOLUME OF MUSIC PLAYED ON THE LAPTOP (VIA USB). There was one show when I had many callers with some great discussions, only to find out that the background music was playing too loud even when I had the channel 7 slider down. I learned that I have to manually put the volume down on the windows player, and the slider does not affect the output volume. It does reflect on direct monitoring from the L8, but not on the livestream.

Despite these dislikes though, I am still giving it a 5 star rating because I was able to solve those issues with some minor workarounds.

Also, I have to commend Phil Shoaff for an awesome customer experience! He was very accommodating to my shipping requests, and I specially appreciate the reminder about the difference in voltage output between the US and the Philippines, and him waiting for my confirmation. Other stores just send stuff without confirming with customers first. So good job Phil and Sweetwater!

All in all, I love this mixer for my purpose. I found myself wanting to do interviews via phone or Internet calls but needed to order additional cabling to facilitate a Mix-Minus function to record calls. I had originally looked at the LiveTrack, L-8 but passed on it because the H-6 would have been more convenient in the field. I ordered the L-8 to use at home to be able to record those great guests via phone call and it is much easier to connect a phone and push a button to get that Mix-Minus than using extra cables and remembering to pan a channel when using the H-6 recorder. So much easier with the L-8! One of the quieter compact mixers Ive used and will probably wind up using it for more than just Podcasts.
\n
\nThe only Con is that I have noticed that I havent been able to get my iPad Pro to recognize it for Card Reader or Interface as of yet but Im still working on it. It has to be somewhere in the OHS (Operator Head-Space).

I got spoiled by the U-44 as I was able to record directly to my iPad Pro 11\" and power the interface and my iPad using Apples USB-C to HDMI multi-adapter. Very convenient.
\n
\nEnter the L-8.
\n
\nThe L-8 has some amazing features not only for music recording but great for podcasting which includes the ability to record a live conversation from a phone and a built monitor for multiple headphones. But there are some trade-offs.
\n
\nTo record to a mobile device like the iPad the L-8 MUST RUN ON BATTERY POWER. A really lame design choice. An extra power port on the L-8 would have solved this (like on the U-44). Definitely an annoyance.
\n
\nThe bigger issue however is when recording, the input numbers on the L-8 board do NOT correspond with the DAW I use (Logic Pro X) nor on GarageBand on my iPad.
\n
\nInitially we thought something was wrong with the unit and Sweetwater advised I send it back and they exchanged it. This was after working with one of the tech folks at SW who was great. When the second unit had the same problem (recording from a Mic in input 1, the L-8 sent the signal to inputs 1,2,3 on the DAW. L-8 Input 2 signal -> 1, 2, 4 on DAW, etc.).
\n
\nIm newer to audio interfaces but not audio recording so I thought the error was my own. After working more with the tech at SW again, he contacted Zoom directly because he also couldnt figure out how to solve the issue or if this 2nd unit was bad too. Zoom apologized for not having clearer instructions in their manual. There IS a brief mention in the manual that input 1 and 2 are actually master inputs and also double as inputs 3 and 4 respectively. This means that, for example, the mic\/line input 3 of the L-8 is actually input 5 on the DAW! Ive used tape on my unit to re-label all the inputs (see photo). Once this was figured out I was rocking and have been using the L-8 successfully.
\n
\nLastly, Ive found that sometimes if I am not getting the level I want, even though the slider is set appropriately, I have to bring the slider down to -\u221e and then back up. This will help to reset the level.
\n
\nLike other reviews, despite these issues, its still a great unit at a very decent price point so Im holding back a half star.
\n
\nOver All:
\n
\nPROS:
\n - Best Price for > 4 inputs
\n - Ability to capture live phone conversations w\/out any delay
\n - Multi-headphone amp built in
\n - Record to Computer, iOS, or SD Card
\n - Built in Sound Pads! (Great for triggering live jingles, SFX, music, etc.)
\n - Built in Channel Strip effects if not working with a DAW
\n - Portable to record on the go or in a home studio
\n
\nCONS:
\n - iOS recording: L-8 MUST run on battery power
\n - Confusing inputs - re-labeling unit highly recommended
\n - Would appreciate more innovative software updates (offered on R\u00f8decaster)
\n - Better documentation for newer users when using multiple inputs
\n - Slightly buggy", "sir_rating": "4.5", "sir_name": "Marc Harley Wilson", "sir_whereareyou": "Evanston, IL", "sir_background": "Podcast Host", "sir_keepanonymous": "0" }, { "id": 2269, "store_items_review_id": 262516, "media_type": "image", "thumbnail": "https:\/\/media.sweetwater.com\/api\/i\/w-160__wm-__q-60__hmac-8939f3d8b2aca484b4185661f37aa6f2246c2db0\/URL_aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3dlYi11cGxvYWRzLTU1OTAyZmZjLzIwMjAwMzEwMDYyODE4LXBocGx5YnllYy5qcGVn", "media_path": "https:\/\/media.sweetwater.com\/api\/i\/w-1080__wm-__q-60__hmac-eb3a7ba32d983809c4711f2a4764d232b3a15487\/URL_aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3dlYi11cGxvYWRzLTU1OTAyZmZjLzIwMjAwMzEwMDYyODE4LXBocGx5YnllYy5qcGVn", "sir_title": "Portable podcast powerhouse", "sir_comments": "My podcast crew now has two of these units in service. The LiveTrak L-8 is an easy-to-use, all-in-one box that gives you everything you need and a couple of nice extras.
\n
\nPros: the ability to multitrack record individual tracks and the master bus simultaneously to the SD card while also being used as a USB interface. The TRRS jack with mix-minus to facilitate recording mobile guests via cell phone or web call.
\n
\nCon: one little bug, occasionally after turning or arming for recording, a few fader meter lights stay on and it impacts whether you can hear that channel. Simple workaround of sliding the fader up and down until the steady lights go off and the meter lights function as normal.

And yet, the LED meters next to those same sliders are the only way to monitor recording levels. The only other facility for monitoring input levels are the single-LED \"SIG\" indicators next to the rotary \"Gain\" knobs, so there is no way to tell if the levels are near peak until they actually do peak. It seems that the only reason for the sliders to exist is to adjust the live mix. And yet the live mix is also influenced by the settings of the rotary controls above them, which have no meters. It can be made to work for either recording or live mixing, but it seems less than ideal for doing both at the same time. One might start by putting all of the sliders at 0dB in order to use them to set the input levels, but then at some point, if one needs to control the live mix, one would have to forgo that functionality in order to use the sliders to control the live mix.
\n
\nMy hope was to replace my Zoom H6, so I was disappointed to discover that the L-8 cannot accommodate unbalanced condenser mics that require \"Plug-in Power\" like the H6 can. It can be made to work with pricey third-party adapters, but the point is that its not built-in. Another missing H6 feature is the ability to control phantom power to each individual input instead of all or none.
\n
\nErgonomically, the first thing that I noticed is that the finish seems to almost beg for reflection and glare. Its hard to read unless the angle of the lighting is just right. The next thing I noticed is that the \"Channel fader\" sliders feel flimsy. And because of the glare, it is surprisingly easy to lose track of which level meters go with which channel faders. Those LED meters may actually be closer to the adjacent sliders than they are to their own designated slider. Hopefully I can eventually learn to associate them as intended, but Id be curious to know how many others have a similar experience. It seems like this would be easy to fix, either by providing more contrast between adjacent controls, or perhaps some physical separators.
\n
\nI would like the layout a lot better if the headphone jacks and the SD card slot were on the front. I dont like reaching behind the unit to get to the power switch either...anywhere visible would be better. Id like it better if that back panel was put to better use for the input jacks, instead of putting them on the top, as that would just be a lot cleaner-looking, and it would also reduce the clearance required to slide it under another piece of equipment such as a keyboard.
\n
\nThe display is adequate, if rather small and in general, the UI seems somewhat awkward to navigate and a bit slow to respond. Some functions are straightforward enough, but other seemingly simple things are difficult or impossible to accomplish. For example, when using the built-in metronome, there is no way to adjust the volume while recording, so it is essentially impossible to hear it in the context of a mix.
\n
\nWith all of that said, the L-8 combines features that cannot be found elsewhere, so if one wants that feature mix, there are essentially no alternatives, unless maybe its Zooms own L-12, but that model is a lot bigger, so its not going to be ideal where space is at a premium . The RODEcaster Pro does some of the same things, but has fewer inputs and costs more. I think that Zooms electronics are good enough for any live environment and arguably good enough for all but the most demanding studio work too. Im sure opinions will vary, but until one gets into the realm of very quiet instrument electronics and very quiet studio mics (used in very quiet studios), the L-8 is not going to be the limiting factor. The built-in digital recorder produces good results, assuming that one can learn to set the levels without dedicated level meters. Although, again, if the live mix isnt a priority, the Channel level meters can serve that purpose well enough.
\n
\nThis mixer is still pretty new to me, so there may yet be some new discoveries. Ill try to update this review with any revelations.", "sir_rating": "4.0", "sir_name": "Mark", "sir_whereareyou": "Richmond, TX", "sir_background": "Keys", "sir_keepanonymous": "0" } ]" :for-review="317072">

Mac

8-INPUTS。

Ill try to update this review with any revelations.", "sir_rating": "4.0", "sir_name": "Mark", "sir_whereareyou": "Richmond, TX", "sir_background": "Keys", "sir_keepanonymous": "0" } ]" :for-review="278971">

LIKES

But to my surprise I also use it without and I get good levels. But I am tired of not getting the settings dialed in. So I bought the Podtrack P4 a sweet little thing! It is good up to about #3 on the gain then after that it is hissy, but I am glad I do not have to wrestle with noise gate and compressor to get clean warm sound! I love it so much that I seldom use the Rode Caster pro. I walk with it to stream live events! However, with the P4 I get clipping and have to always dial down as the events are preaching and shouting is involved :) So I did many, many hours of research on the live track L8, many youtube videos. Read many reviews and took it into account, but all I want is to by pass the digital settings as per the Rodecaster pro. So I bit the bullet and my first connection to the SM7B was that I had to use almost all the gain settings but got clean sounds. I decided to use the dynamite lifter to dial it down considerably to 10'oclock position from 4 o'clock! I am loving this thing! I went to church tonight and used the live track L8 and man was I pleased!! I could easily observe the level meters for the sliders and I felt so proud with it on the table! I have yet to dial in the effects and the other menus but even without that, I am using the machine and I am thankful. Was also thinking of the Tascam model 12 but for now I will use the 30 day try out and see if I will keep it. The menus are so so to figure out. Got to look at more youtube videos! For now this is my little input. Thanks again Max.

——Multi-headphone amp

LIKES

LIKES

\nPros: the ability to multitrack record individual tracks and the master bus simultaneously to the SD card while also being used as a USB interface. The TRRS jack with mix-minus to facilitate recording mobile guests via cell phone or web call.

It has a marking system, but, unlike the R16, does not have the auto punch in feature. You have to manually hit record and stop at just the right time to start and stop the overdub. That means two people have to be there for punching in on an instrument track. It's big brother the L12 has the same flaw, but has a footswitch input that can start and stop recording. What were they thinking?

M1 Mac

The current driver is from around a year ago (2/7/2020) and there isn't any indication anywhere that a new driver is in the works (though it's certainly possible).

\n
\nIf youre into Podcasting, I highly recommend the Zoom LiveTrak, L-8 mixer. Versatile, compact and affordable with a Mix-Minus function built in?

Ill try to update this review with any revelations.", "sir_rating": "4.0", "sir_name": "Mark", "sir_whereareyou": "Richmond, TX", "sir_background": "Keys", "sir_keepanonymous": "0" } ]" :for-review="259199">

This is really convenient if you have the new k12.2 speakers. You may or may not know that those speakers have a glitch that this feature helps with. On the newer k12 when you turn up the volume it jumps to the next volume in huge intervals, not smooth one the previous models. This can be a problem when you are plugged into the house and need to use one as a monitor. I also really like the size and simplicity. It should also be noted that you can change the eq for each channel (high/low/mid) but you can't change the final signal before sending everything. That's kind of a bummer but not usually the end of the world. For the price I still really love this unit, I would still use if the power supply issue was different. Thanks to Sweetwater's sweetcard warranty I am able get taken care of. That's one of many reasons I continue to purchase from Sweetwater.
