Many people think arranger keyboards are basically toys and years ago that was true but today nothing could be further from the truth. The Yamaha Genos in particular is able to rival the best traditional workstation keyboards currently on the market IMO. This video will give listeners some key insight regarding the Genos sonic capability. Yes, its expensive, but if youre a singer/songwriter the Genos makes a great sketch pad for new song material. This is an arranger keyboard but you dont have to use the Style accompaniment to thrill an audience. The Style accompaniment will make you sound like your own live band i.e. a one-man band, OMB for short. People will say because its an arranger keyboard its gotta sound like a toy. That was the case years ago but those days are over. The Genos is Yamahas flagship arranger and it does cost a pretty penny but if you Gig then this could be right up your alley and could be considered a solid investment. There are multiple ways to create music with the Yamaha Genos. If youre a songwriter the Genos makes a great sketchpad for creating songs. If youre a singer you can hook up a Dynamic or Cardioid microphone to the Genos plus theres a vocal harmonizer feature that actually sounds pretty decent when adjusted properly. Sounds are the most important aspect of any keyboard and the Genos sounds (Yamaha calls them Voices) are top-notch in virtually every category. I provided a video demonstration to give you a better idea of some of the great sounds in the Genos. Yamahas latest OS version for the Genos is 2.02 which fixes a few bugs and adds new features and greater live performance enhancements. I noticed a couple negative reviews in this review section but again I think they were mostly upset about the new operating system layout which is much different than the Genos predecessor the Tyros 5. The person who owned a Clavinova and said the Genos was basically a toy and didnt sound that good may have listened to demos online e.g. YouTube, etc., and the musician possibly wasnt that skilled. Anyway, I went ahead and provided a video link to a song demonstration of the Genos so people can judge if it lives up to the hype. Orchestral instrument voices exactly mimic the real ones, including expected, inherent noises made by humans when playing the real things. Youll swear there are skilled musicians right there playing actual guitars, saxophones, tumpet, trombone, Bowed strings (vioin, viola, cello, and ensemble strings), drawbar & other organs, percussions etc., though you are only playing Genos keys! At last ONE KEYBOARD has it all--and each is astonishingly a "clone" of the instruments voice (or style ensemble / band).

One voice was not as expected—but with a simple tweak it became what it should be. The CFX Concert Grand Piano (Default tone when powered on) lacked the true, Concert Grand sound which I heard on other Yamaha models. Genos default was quite disappointing, always mellow, no power at hard velocity play. I tweaked the velocity sensitivity and offset settings, and WOW!!! Genos now has the awesome Concert Grand character I expected.

Genos styles provide every possible back-up band sound, likewise producing the most genuine realism for every genre! Applause, tips ($$$), rave complements, and new bookings are way UP on gigs, now using Genos alone. (I had been using two; Yamaha Tyros 2 for styles & instruments – and a Roland FP-30 just for Piano.) Genos alone does it all and does it BETTER.

It's made me rethink every song I wrote on a older Yamaha Arranger because the Genos opens up so many possibilities. I can't pay enough compliments to the Yamaha staff for the astounding improves to the drum kits and guitar sounds. OMG! Talk about nailing it. The GENOS cost is comparatively high but what you get is priceless. Thank you so very much Yamaha!

Many people think arranger keyboards are basically toys and years ago that was true but today nothing could be further from the truth. The Yamaha Genos in particular is able to rival the best traditional workstation keyboards currently on the market IMO.

All the keyboards I listed above, some have been flagship models, and each one I felt always had serious limitations, or something that did not make it a full solution, the genos is now a full solution, and just amazingly deep. I did struggle to grasp the workflow, but once I started to figure it out, it is crazy fast, and easy. Personally all my other boards, were complicated, and I approached the genos the same way, wrong, you struggle, because you do not realize the simplicity! lol At least that was my gatherings/blatherings. Where I really feel yammy nailed it, besides the amazing sound quality, and architecture, was being able to assign almost anything to anything, and routing, finally!! oh the verb sounds amazing in this thing (diggin the fx engine), it did at times feel like a toy to me, but it is a sleeper (1000 dollar car with 20,000 dollar drag motor under the hood) I realized yammy nailed it by making this so portable (flyable). I do still struggle a bit with the file system, but eventually I will get it, I just get too caught up in writing to stop to learn. The memory button is fantastic!! It is absolutely a turn key solution for me as a writer, and if I want to dumb down, and play other peoples music, that option is available for me as well. OH and peace out EDM folks, this board can do that too with a Dj style player built in as well, jesus I could hear jack black inserting something witty about being able to be a REAL Live Dj and crushing Deadmou5 and diplo cry cries. I do hope that yamaha continues to invest in more sounds, registrations etc. and do not lump them with tyros, make a selfishly dedicated genos website only, seriously, this creative tool deserves it!

Many people think arranger keyboards are basically toys and years ago that was true but today nothing could be further from the truth. The Yamaha Genos in particular is able to rival the best traditional workstation keyboards currently on the market IMO.

Yamaha states that Genos has Yamaha's CFX Grand Piano. It may well have some element of it, but what Genos has is clearly thinner and less powerful than the CFX pianos in Yamaha's other models. If Genos Grand Piano was on par with Genos other instruments quality, it would deserve 5 stars. Except for the grand piano, I'm otherwise musically satified beyond my expectations with my new Genos. One more negative is Genos "owner's manual." It briefly describes each panel control. But in most cases, this manual refers you to go to Yamaha's on-line website to learn HOW TO details for these features. I've figured out what I need by trial & error, and stumbling upon operations by accident. Worst owners manual ever.
Still some functions are confusing. I don't like the shape and built quality because it is made up with plastics . It is light weight and look like a toy keyboard.
