\nIt really comes down to preferences but this does everything you need. I record drum tracks and this has really opened up my world. Has a really great monitor that makes everything crystal clear in the mix coming in - it makes playing easier.

Used it for many years. This is my second Tascam 24 Track Portastudio. The first was a Neo over 10 years ago with a built in CD recorder. It was good but cumbersome. I later replaced it with a Tascam DP-03SD 8 track digital Portastudio which I still have and love. I just bought this year with a 20% discount a TASCAM DP-24SD 24-track Digital Portastudio. Its very similar to use as the DP-03SD but with 24 channels, 8 inputs and larger screen now in color. Love it. Love it. Currently using it to record new song my wife and I wrote. 5 stars all the way with a proven history. Ive now owned 5 Tascam Portastudios. They are all great but the last two are my favorites. I recently turned 70 but Im not done yet. I know the slides are not going to represent the volume settings , but you can click on the mixer screen and get the setting and put the slides were they go instead of having to write the settings down on a peace of paper. \nIt really comes down to preferences but this does everything you need. I record drum tracks and this has really opened up my world. Has a really great monitor that makes everything crystal clear in the mix coming in - it makes playing easier.

I've played professionally for over 50 years and if you're serious about making and recording your own music then give the Digitech 24SD a try. I was between the this machine and the Zoom R24 and picked the Tascam. The Zoom seemed flimsy and basic and the many negative reviews reflect that. The Zoom from what I read is geared towards someone who wants to use a computer based DAW along with the unit plus the Zoom is much older technology! The Tascam is built like a tank, has controls for everything and a nice color screen as well. It's a true all in one studio without requiring any computer. I'm very happy with it and look forward to making many recordings. A+

This is particularly useful when I have two identical acoustic guitar tracks and want them combined into a single stereo 'double-tracked' track. I very often find I've used all 24 tracks.

With those two gripes out of the way, I think this may be the best choice out there right now, there are not many options for standalone recorders. It is an amazing tool, and for half the cost of the old 2488, a total bargain. I hated the zoom r24 by the way, no editing, nowhere near the features. The Tascam is a wonderful experience after that, I'm more than happy with it. One other caveat: use the recommended sd card, the exact one. I used a cheaper one a guy on a forum said worked fine, but I had some glitches, and then lost half a song. Got a 32gb Tascam-recommended one and it's been working flawlessly for months. Also it will not accept sd cards over 32gb, fyi.

You will probably will want to use the external effect sends and hook up to the favorite effects rig of your choosing to get a more professional sound. They aren't terrible..just less than what I require. The DP 24SD makes for fast and efficient work. I've also actually taken mine out of the country on two occasions..packed it in my carry on bag in a very tight fit and it make it there and back on both occasions working perfectly. I'm not recommending this..but it's a true statement. It's held up great. It's an absolute fantastic bargain for the price..you can't beat it. I'd recommend it to anyone no matter their level of experience in recording.
